Abstract
This chapter amplifies the one paragraph description of the heuristic given in the introduction. We develop a language, slightly abstract and more than slightly vague, in which the examples in subsequent chapters are discussed. The “Commentary” at the end of the chapter gives some perspective, relating the heuristic to more standard topics and techniques in probability theory. We illustrate the heuristic method with one simple example, the M/M/1 queue. To avoid interrupting the flow later, let us first develop notation for this process.
