Abstract

ADDSIA (Access to Distributed Data for Statistical Information and Analysis) is a research project managed by Eurostat under the Development of Statistical Information Systems (DOSIS) initiative. It uses distributed database techniques and Web technology to facilitate more effective access to statistical data The interface with existing systems offers the user the ability to access different sites from a single web browser, and to combine data from different sources. We describe the overall architecture of the system and identify the theoretical advances, particularly methods for documenting the data manipulation that takes place during analysis, and the development of a DTD (Document Type Description) for combining statistical data. The paper locates ADDSIA in the Decision Sciences discipline, with particular reference to information from official statistics. We review the achievements of the project, consider the impact that emerging technologies have had on it during its lifetime, and discuss the future possibilities, both theoretical and practical.
