Abstract

Naturalists often want estimates of population sizes that are difficult to measure directly. The captire/recapture method allows one to estimate, for example, the number of fish in a lake. This idea is also the basis of methods that the Census Bureau has developed that can be used in adjusting population figures obtained in the decennial census (although using sampling techniques to adjust the census is controversial).
