Abstract
Before considering the question of the biological significance of the GMF we will point out that it is a controversial question. Although this subject has an ancient history, there are still no grounds for accepting completely the geomagnetic theory of development of the earth’s biosphere. During the last ten years, however, scientific and technical progress has immeasurably widened the horizons of human knowledge and research, with the result that the important role of the GMF in the life of the biosphere has become apparent.
