Photoelectron Spectroscopy of Molecular Clusters: N2 and N2O

Abstract

HeI photoelectron spectra of gas phase clusters of small molecules are presented for the first time. Using a pulsed jet preparation system the spectra of molecular beams of N2 and N2O respectively are analysed to give data on the percentage condensation. An extension of the dielectric polarization relaxation model which considers spherical clusters shows that shifts in vertical ionization energies are approximately linear with log N for clusters of N molecules. The model should be useful in the N = 102 – 104 size range.
