Laser-Induced Fluorescence and Raman Investigations of Ag n (n≥4) by Means of Matrix Isolation Spectroscopy

  • Chapter
Physics and Chemistry of Small Clusters

Abstract

Results of laser-induced fluorescence and resonance Raman investigations of silver microclusters isolated in cryogenic rare-gas matrices are reported. The corresponding emission and Raman bands are correlated with two absorption bands in the green spectral range which have been attributed to silver tetramers or hexamers (Ag4;6).1 The same emission and Raman bands show up at violet excitation, too, giving evidence of a transition to a higher electronic state. The emission bands of one species in Kr and Ar matrices show an indication of a vibrational fine structure. A computer fit to the experimental data gives a vibrational spacing of ≈125 cm-1 in good agreement with the Raman data. The other species shows modes in the 68–77 cm-1 and 150–163 cm-1 range depending on matrix gas and the trapping site occupied.
