Abstract

Molecular beams of bare metal clusters containing up to 30–40 atoms of either tin or lead are prepared by laser vaporization in a pulsed nozzle source. Laser photoionization mass spectra of these clusters are characterized by magic number patterns. Laser wavelength and power dependence studies, and comparisons to previous electron impact data, probe stability in both neutral and cation clusters.
