Abstract
The historical continuum of human progress finds what is probably its clearest expression in the evolution of architectural forms. The morphology of curvilinear structures in present architecture is connected directly to the forms developed over thousands of years of experience with them. Thus, only by knowing the historical development of various curvilinear forms is it possible to fully understand their present applications. Obviously, the steel and concrete materials of the present differ substantially from the masonry of the past, yet the overall structural concepts can be applied equally to the present and the past. The recent large-scale megastructures over stadiums are not isolated creations but expressions of a gradual progressive development of engineering processes that include structural analysis and examining the strength of materials.
