Oxygen Transport to Tissue — III

Abstract

Oxygen consumption rate of small brain tissue slices is considerably increased if the tissue is stimulated by means of electrical impulses. This has been demonstrated in vitro by use of the Warburg apparatus (McIlwain, 1951; Klaus, 1967; among others). Until now the effect of artificial stimulation on oxygen consumption in vivo has not been analysed. In order to investigate the influence of electrical stimulation on the O2 consumption rate, we used bipolar platinum microelelectrodes to excite a defined tissue volume of the rat brain cortex. Both the field potentials and the local PO2 were measured at the same point in the cortex. The aim of our study was to produce local hypoxia or anoxia by increasing the local oxygen consumption rate and to analyse any regional cerebral blood flow reactions which may be caused by small areas of hypoxic tissue.
