Release of Acetylcholine Triggered by the Venom of Glycera Convoluta

  • Chapter
Cholinergic Mechanisms

Part of the book series: Advances in Behavioral Biology ((ABBI,volume 25))

Abstract

The polychaete annelid Glycera convolute (3) has four small glands, associated to its jaws, containing a toxic substance. When injected into the coelomlc cavity of crabs the venom rapidly killed the animals. We therefore looked for a possible neurotoxicity of this substance. We report here that the venom of Glycera (GV) applied to frog neuromuscular preparations or Torpedo electric organs, triggers an important increase in the frequency of miniature potentials, but it does not induce ultrastructural changes in contrast to other presynaptic venoms (2).
