Abstract
The major energy-yielding fuels ingested in the diet and found as normal body constituents are carbohydrate, fat, and protein. This review will focus on some recent advances in the disposal, production, and interconversion of these substrates. Emphasis will be placed on normal physiology, inasmuch as various disease states (e.g., diabetes, obesity, amino acid disorders) are covered in detail elsewhere in this volume. In addition, the fuel response to such conditions as starvation and exercise will also be reviewed.
