Abstract

There are more psychologists in the United States than in any other five countries combined, and the well over 50,000 American psychologists are setting the stage in research and practice of psychology for the entire world. Numerically, they account for about one-third of the number of psychologists in the world and their intellectual production exceeds 50% of all written work in psychology. A British psychologist who was a disciple of a German psychologist and who in 1892 became an American professor is often called the father of American psychology. The man is Edward Bradford Titchener, Wilhelm Wundt’s disciple, the founder of experimental psychology and exponent of structuralism at Cornell University.

Based on information supplied by C. Alan Boneau, acting executive officer, and Harley O. Preston, director, Office of External Affairs of the American Psychological Association, and other sources.
