Effects of Specific FSH Deprivation on Testicular Germ Cell Transformations and on LDH-X and Hyaluronidase Activity of Immature and Adult Rats

Abstract

Although the requirement for FSH to initiate spermatogenesis in the immature rat is well accepted (1–3), its continuous need to support quantitative sperm production in the adulthood is questioned (4, 5). It is suggested that testosterone (T) alone is adequate to maintain sperm production and testicular function in the adult state (6). Since the Sertoli cell (Sc), the primary regulator of germ cell transformation and maturation through the various factors it puts out, continues to be sensitive to both FSH and T even in the adult rat (7), we felt by corollary that FSH should have an effect on spermatogenesis even in the adult rat.
