Abstract
Let’s Jet’s begin by giving Martin a little test (due to Murray Klamkin) of his mathematical intuition. Imagine a flat stretch of straight railway track AB, 5000 feet long, which is immovably fastened down at each end (Figure 1). In the heat of the summer the track expands 2 feet, causing it to buckle. Assuming it bends symmetrically, how high do you think the bulge rises above the ground at the middle? An inch? 4 feet? A tenth of an inch?
