Abstract

The gut is one of the main targets of acute GVHR in man and the pathogenesis of the injury is poorly understood. Using various experimental models in mice we tried (1) to shed some light on the occurrence, nature and mechanism of lesions. Our observations led us to the conclusion that the basic situation responsible for intestinal tissue damage is the stimulation of the foreign “donor” T lymphocytes. T lymphocytes activated to proliferate under alloantigenic influence in Peyer’s patches, reach the gut wall through the thoracic duct (2) and are further stimulated by contact with antigen. Release of T cell factors are probably mainly responsible for the acceleration of the epithelial renewal which is the most sensitive index of the epithelial damage.
