Abstract
Much has been written on the emotional stresses of physical illness and subsequent health care from the perspective of children and their families.4.11.13–15The stress upon staff in caring for children has received less attention. Several studies7,9,16have detailed stresses affecting staff in adult centers, such as long working hours, intensive involvement with families, rapidly changing technology in medical care, and emotional strain from long-term involvement with severely ill or dying patients. This has led to interest in methods that help staff cope with such stress.
