Abstract
A substantial fraction of the research efforts dedicated to intermediate energy nucleon scattering has sought to ascertain the quantitative accuracy of a description of these phenomena in terms of one-body operators. Several important components of such a description are: 1) the properties of the free two-nucleon interaction; 2) the modifications of this interaction in the nuclear environment; and 3) the structure of the target nucleus. For the present discussion, we assume that the relevant aspects of the structure of the target are accurately known by independent means, such as electron scattering. We shall concentrate on the sensitivity of nucleon inelastic scattering and charge exchange to the properties of the free two-nucleon interaction and the modifications due to the nuclear density.
