Abstract
Many people have difficulty handling the ups and downs of everyday family life. Herrman, McKenry, and Weber (1979) point out:
People are typically “reluctant decision makers.” They try to avoid conflict and decisions over which there is little control or decisions with possible negative effects. Divorcing parties have not been able to manage family conflict successfully in the past, otherwise divorce would not be imminent. (p. 17)
These unmanageable conflicts, however, are not confined to divorcing couples. They can plague all the adults and children throughout any family with significant disputes.
