Abstract

By studying the behavioral physiology of closely related species, we can reconstruct the probable evolutionary history of a behavior and of the mechanisms that control it. By then comparing the ecologies of the species, we gain insight into the ultimate factors that may have given rise to these adaptations. This is the essence of the comparative method.
