Abstract

In this paper we study systems which are spread out in one spatial dimension, and where different spatial portions can be in differing states of local stability. Adjacent portions will be separated by transition regions called domain walls, kinks, or solitons. Our considerations are limited to the case in which adjacent members of the one-dimensional array are tightly coupled, and a continuum model applies. We will first attempt to classify a number of cases fitting the preceding description.
