Rotational Diffusion Coefficients

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: NATO Advanced Study Institutes Series ((NSSB,volume 64))

Abstract

The time dependence (buildup and decay) of electro-optic properties of macromolecules in solution is determined by the rotational diffusion coefficients (RDC’s) of the macromolecule. In this paper we will be concerned only with rigid macromolecules (for flexible polymers see Jernigan’s paper in this book) so that other relevant aspects such as chain statistics and internal motions are left out of our presentation. The RDC’s enter in the diffusion equation governing the temporal evolution of the orientational distribution function when the electric field is switched on or off. The solution of this equation for the time dependent distribution function is not an easy task, but can be achieved under some physically meaningful simplifying assumptions, and from it one can calculate the expectation values of the electro-optical properties as a function of time provided that the rotational diffusion constants are known.
