The Prevalence of Alcoholism Among General Medical Patients in Large Municipal Hospitals

  • Chapter
Drug Dependence and Alcoholism

Abstract

The diagnosis and treatment of alcoholism plays a major role in the dynamics of health care delivery in every general hospital in the United States. Yet, there exists a significant disparity between the number of alcoholics treated in a general hospital and the actual number of patients who are alcoholic. Estimates of the actual number of alcholics range from 10 to 45% of the adult medical population based on various sources of information and different criteria of what constitutes alcoholism.
