Abstract
This is the first in a series of reports on a large-scale, longterm outcome evaluation of Gateway Houses, a residential drug-free treatment program (therapeutic community) for drug abusers in Illinois. Follow-up subjects (N=648) are a sample of all first admissions to a Gateway treatment facility between July, 1968 and June, 1974 (N=1418). Time between discharge from treatment and date of follow-up ranges from one to nine and one-half years.
Funding for this project was provided in part by the Joyce Foundation, Chicago, Illinois. The author gratefully acknowledges the perseverance of the Policy Research Corporation in conducting the field work, the enthusiastic support of the Gateway Houses staff, and the special assistance of Michael Darcy, Sandie Swieca, and Amy Barron.
