Proposal for a Structural Refinement in Our Treatment Methodology: Using the Short-Term Treatment Contract

Abstract

This proposal is predicated on the belief that methadone should be a tool for the client to use to make meaningful adaptations in his/her life system. Methadone should not be an end in itself. (Functionally it is not, because of the incidence of polydrug abuse). This proposal makes the assumption that the client must assume a responsible approach toward re-entering the social superstructure. If we are going to take the responsibility for addicting/maintaining the client on methadone, then we also share the responsibility for helping the client to make reasonable efforts at developing a more successful and socially acceptable life style. In short, we have the mandate, and the responsibility, to expect that the client will make these efforts.
