The Results of Data Analysis on 50 Pregnancy and Addiction Studies 1965–1977

  • Chapter
Drug Dependence and Alcoholism

Abstract

During 1977, Burt Associates, Incorporated conducted a study of pregnancy and addiction for the National Institute on Drug Abuse. The major research questions addressed were:

  • What are the differential effects of heroin and methadone on the mother and her offspring?

  • How does polydrug abuse in conjunction with heroin and/or methadone affect pregnancy outcomes?

  • What are the risks to the fetus/infant and mother as a result of drug taking behavior?

This study was part of a larger project on drug abusing women conducted for the National Institute on Drug Abuse, Contract No. 27176–4401. The paper was adapted from a report by S. Dickey, Pregnancy and Addiction, Rockville, Maryland: National Institute on Drug Abuse, in press. We wish to thank and acknowledge Mr. Charles A. Darby, M.A. for his outstanding contribution on the data analysis for this paper and the larger report.
