Abstract
The intimal connective tissue plays a major role in atherosclerosis. It is directly concerned in the proliferative changes leading to stenosis, and appears to be significantly involved in lipid accumulation. The purpose of this paper is to relate the available information on the amounts of acid glycosaminoglycans (GAG), collagen, and elastin in the human intima to the amounts of intact intimai lipoprotein and of bound or precipitated lipid. It is clear that there are major gaps in our knowledge, and that this is an area in which further work is urgently required.
