Tunneling Measurement of Magnetic Scattering

  • Chapter
Low Temperature Physics-LT 13

Abstract

It is well known that magnetic impurities destroy superconductivity. Reif and Woolf1 were the first to investigate this phenomenon by the tunneling method. They introduced impurities into the metal and studied the state of the whole system. They observed that the singularity in the tunnel junction I–V curve smeared and was displaced to zero bias when the amount of impurity was increased. These and similar results agree with the ideas of Abrikosov and Gor’kov about Cooper-pair-breaking by magnetic scattering of electrons.
