Internal Friction Measurements on Copper-Zinc Based Martensite

  • Chapter
Shape Memory Effects in Alloys

Abstract

The alloys discussed in this symposium are not only characterized by their shape-memory effect and pseudoelasticity but they show also peculiar damping properties. The internal friction as well as the extremely high capacity for damping contact noise are linked to the same metallurgical and physical phenomena that determine the SME-effects. Also, since measurements of internal friction yield important information on the mechanism of martensite formation, premartensitic phenomena, structural changes in the martensite phase, more attention will be paid in the present paper therefore to the internal friction.
