Abstract
Trauma has a generalized efffect on the whole organism or man in addition to well recognized direct effects on specific tissues. The nervous and endocrine systems coordinate and integrate a whole organism response to these generalized effects of trauma. These are in part efforts to facilitate and coordinate for the organism protection, stabilization and adaptation to environmental change. The adaptation response of the organism to bring about adjustments to meet environmental change was a concept first developed and organized as a thesis by Hans Selye of this conference. It remains a cornerstone of our concepts. Effecting such adaptations is the major purpose of the nervous and endocrine system in response to trauma or any stress.
