Abstract

With hindsight I can say that my career as an investigator in child psychiatry started when I was at the University of Chicago studying premedical and medical courses and pathology from 1918 to 1923. I worked in the pathological laboratories of H. Gideon Wells studying the blood of tuberculous guinea pigs and learning the methodology and philosophy of research (Bender and DeWitt, 1923–1924).
