Abstract

The media used in all the SMBS lasers reported in the literature are various liquids. In a number of cases, however, it is preferable to use compressed gases [25] because of their better optical quality and higher self-focusing threshold. SMBS was observed many times in compressed gases (see, e.g., [12, 49, 50]), but information on the line widths and the gains are highly limited. Calculations of these parameters are available only for hydrogen and nitrogen [49]. To choose the most suitable medium, we have determined the gains and the line widths of a number of gases [51]. This work was performed with the experimental setup illustrated in Fig. 4.
