Modifications of Polysome-Associated RNA After Poliovirus Infection

  • Chapter
Gene Expression and its Regulation

Part of the book series: Basic Life Sciences ((BLSC))

Abstract

It is reasonable to assume that viral infection triggers a number of host cell responses; some produced by oncogenic viruses are already well documented (1). It would be surprising that, among viruses lytic for eukaryotic cells, replication would be solely a cytoplasmic event. Since there are data suggesting the existence of signals that reach the cell nucleus after poliovirus infection (2,3), we decided to look for alterations of polysome-associated RNA as one of the early HeLa cell responses to the viral stimulus. This paper will describe the alterations detected and a preliminary characterization of the RNA molecules involved.
