Abstract
The literature relating to the relationship between the renal kallikrein/kinin system and the excretion of salt and water is somewhat confused because different effects have been reported in different studies. The object of the present study was to demonstrate that though appropriate doses of angiotensin may produce natriuresis in both the dog and the rat, the effect on the kallikrein excretion in the urine is quite different. In the dog natriuresis was associated with increased kallikrein in the urine, whereas in the rat the kallikrein excretion was progressively decreased by angiotensin infusion. Although natriuresis produced by angiotensin in the rat caused depression of urinary kallikrein, the super-imposition of synthetic atrial natriuretic peptide was still able to increase kallikrein excretion as it does without angiotensin in rats.
