Bacteriophage DNA as a Model for Correlation of Radical Damage to DNA and Biological Effects

  • Chapter
Mechanisms of DNA Damage and Repair

Part of the book series: Basic Life Sciences ((BLSC,volume 189))

Abstract

The radiolysis of neutral water by γ-rays can be summarized by means of the following symbolical expression:

$${H_2}O\,\, \to 0.70\,\,{H_2}{O_2}\, + \,0.45\,{H_2}|\, + \,2.7\,\dot OH\, + \,2.65\,e_{aq}^ - \, + \,0.55\,\dot H$$
(7)

The figures in this equation represent the radiation-chemical yields of the products, i.e. the number of molecules or radicals produced per 100 eV of absorbed energy.
