Abstract

The turn-over rate of plasma membrane constituents is much slower than expected from the endocytic activity of most cell types, i.e. the rate at which endocytic vesicles arise from cell surface and fuse with lysosomes (1,2). Two hypotheses have been put forward to account for this discrepancy: (a) only very discrete and small parts of plasma membrane are involved in endocytosis, and their fast turn-over has remained so far undetected (3); (b) after endocytosis, most of the plasma membrane constituents internalized are returned intact to the cell surface (4).
