Abstract
During the past few years the field of acoustic microscopy has changed dramatically. It has moved from a concentration on development into the realm of application. This is not to say that the process of development has ended. There will undoubtedly be major improvements and innovations in the future. But the presently existing instruments are beginning to open a few doors. The most important function of these prototype instruments is to show what can be learned at present and to indicate what may be learned in the future.
