Incidence, Diagnosis, and Management of Skull Fractures

  • Chapter
Head Injuries in the Newborn and Infant

Part of the book series: Principles of Pediatric Neurosurgery ((PRINCPEDIATR))

Abstract

Skull lesions after head injuries in infants occur relatively frequently in comparison with adults and even older children. The flexibility of the bones of the infant’s skull, as well as open sutures present in very young children, explain the main characteristics of fractures and, especially, their frequency. If a true fracture is a disruption of the bones of the skull as a result of head trauma, a lesion of a suture (localized dysjunction or disruption) must also be considered a traumatic lesion.
