Abstract
The past five years have seen a number of proposals for serving hand-held voice and data terminals directly by satellite. While there has been considerable hype over individual system capabilities and schedules, over one third of the investment needed to launch four competing global mobile satellite systems has been secured. With prototype spacecraft being launched during 1996/7, initial commercial services can be expected to be in operation by 1998–2001.
