Abstract
In systematic biology, no concept has been the subject of such heated debate as the species concept (Minelli, 1993) Ecotoxicological research should provide information that will enable genetic diversity in ecosystems to be maintained or increased, especially in areas which in the past, present or future might be affected by pollution. Genetic diversity is often called ‘biodiversity’ and is usually measured by counting numbers of species. However, such an approach is scientifically unsound because for many groups of animals there is no reliable, internationally accepted definition of the threshold of morphological or genetic difference that is required between two organisms before they can be considered to be separate species
