Abstract

The study of neural coding involves the analysis of four formal aspects: the referent (relevant features of the input), the transformation (encoding process), the transmission (anatomical and physiological substrates of neural signaling) and the interpretation (recoding by a higher-order set of neurons or decoding by an effector) (Perkel & Bullock, 1968). Much of this study has been experimentally attacked by recordings obtained from sensory systems, where the fidelity or reliability of the representation process may be easily assessed.
