Abstract

The devastating ecological considerations inherent in the use of chemical nematicides has prompted research efforts to look for alternative pest management strategies, and much emphasis has been diverted to the exploitation of biological control agents. The soil ecosystem, of which phytonematodes constitute one of the components, is a biologically dynamic system involving a galaxy of microorganisms, interacting among themselves in all possible ways. Identifying potential antagonists of phytonematodes and harnessing their biological attributes in the management of phytonematode populations is a challenging job. Several antagonists of phytonematodes have been identified and these belong to diverse groups i.e., fungi, bacteria, viruses (parasites/ pathogens), mites, predatory nematodes, enchytreids, collemboles, etc. (predators). Of these, fungal antagonists have received greater attention.
