Abstract
Over the last decades biomolecules and subcellular organelles have been extensively studied under in vitro conditions using a variety of techniques. This “test tube” approach has yielded a wealth of information on the properties of these individual building blocks of the cell. Simultaneously, it has become clear that their interplay in the complex context of the intact cell is not a simple summation of their in vitro properties.
