Abstract
The London Water Ring Main project includes 80 km of tunnels, linking the water treatment works within the Thames and Lee valleys. To improve tunnel construction time, Thames Water Utilities Ltd (TWUL) developed a new type of expanded wedgeblock concrete lining, for the second phase of the project, with new tunnel boring machines. Taylor Woodrow Construction (TWC) undertook in conjunction with TWUL to design, develop and load-test four types of segmental rings, subsequently followed by manufacture of 275,000 segments.
