Abstract
Nephrocalcin (NC) is a renal tubular glycoprotein and is a major urinary inhibitor of calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM) crystal growth. It has been isolated from human urine, human kidney tissue culture medium, renal stones and kidney tissue of nine vertebrate species. NC from adult stone-formers is biochemically different from NC produced by healthy adults and inhibits COM crystal growth less strongly. We partially purified NC from urine of children with COM stone disease and healthy children. The NC elution patterns from an anion-exchange chromatography column were compared to those from healthy and stone-forming adults.
