Abstract
The author had the privilege of living in Niger Republic, West Africa as a Christian missionary and development worker for 18 years. He directed the Maradi Integrated Development Project (MIDP), which has helped farmers to evaluate their problems and work towards solving them using local resources and people since 1975. In his first four years it was particularly frustrating to see the massive scale of deforestation and land degradation, the apparent apathy of the people and the low success rate of both government and non-government forestry projects.
