Abstract
Non-insulin dependent (type 2) diabetes mellitus accounts for more than 90% of all cases of diabetes. An increased incidence of cardiovascular diseases is the most common complication of NIDDM.1,2 The cardiac complications associated with NIDDM are due to both increased coronary heart disease secondary to atherosclerosis3 and a specific diabetic cardiomyopathy resulting in ventricular dysfunction.4
