Abstract
In the clinical evaluation of dry eye, many diagnostic tests are utilized in making a dry eye diagnosis. Unfortunately, a single “gold standard” diagnostic test does not exist. 1 While the repeatability of many of the clinical tests used to diagnose dry eye have been assessed in normal patients, the repeatability of these tests and of surveys used in dry eye diagnosis has not been evaluated in dry eye patients. In addition to the battery of clinical diagnostic tests assessed in this study, two surveys were evaluated: McMonnies’s Dry Eye Questionnaire was developed to assess likelihood of dry eye, 2 and the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ-25)3.4 was developed to assess vision-specific quality of life. However, the ocular pain subscale of the latter can be used as an indication of dry eye symptoms. In this study, the repeatability of a battery of dry eye diagnostic tests, the McMonnies’s dry eye questionnaire, and the NEI-VFQ-25 were assessed on a sample of dry eye patients.
