Part of the book series: Issues in Women’s Health ((WOHI))

Abstract

Although incidence and mortality rates vary greatly in the world’s regions, breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among women in the world, representing 21% of all newly diagnosed cases in 1990. Among women, breast cancer also is the most common cause of death from cancer (Parkin & P. Pisani, 1999). With few exceptions, the highest age-standardized incidence rates in the world are found in developed countries, and the lowest rates are in less developed countries (see Table 1). Although age-standardized incidence rates have been relatively stable in the United States in recent years (Ries et al., 2000a), rates in most other countries have been increasing, and this is especially true in developing nations. According to a recent report, the world incidence of breast cancer is projected to be 1.45 million new cases in 2010, an 82% increase over 1990 incidence estimates (Parkin & P. Pisani, 1999).
