Antibody Response to Haemophilus Influenzae Type B (HIB) in Children with Invasive HIB Infection in Relation to Duration of Exclusive Breastfeeding

Integrating Population Outcomes, Biological Mechanisms and Research Methods in the Study of Human Milk and Lactation

Abstract

In an earlier case-control study we found a protective effect of breastfeeding on invasive Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) infection beyond the period of breastfeeding itself.1 In our ecologic study we also found an indication of a protective effect of breastfeeding at a population level.2 The present investigation was performed in order to analyze the serum antibody response to Hib in children with invasive Hib infection in relation to age, diagnosis, smoking, maternal anti-Hib antibodies and duration of breast-feeding.
