Definition
The historic nomenclature for anaphylaxis reserved the term “anaphylactic” for reactions mediated by immunoglobulin E (IgE) and the term “anaphylactoid” for reactions that were not IgE-mediated (Sampson et al. 2006). IgE-mediated and non-IgE-mediated reactions are, however, typically clinically indistinguishable. It is therefore now considered preferable to use the term “anaphylaxis,” irrespective of the mechanism involved. These reactions can then, if necessary, be subclassified as “immunologic” (i.e., IgE-mediated and non-IgE-mediated [e.g., IgG- and immune complex complement-mediated]) and “non-immunologic” (i.e., events resulting in sudden mast cell and basophil degranulation in the absence of immunoglobulins) reactions, as shown in Fig. 1 (Johansson et al. 2004).
